Country Living's website recently featured a slideshow of a less-than-covetable staircase in a reader's home. From the picture, it's obvious that the space needed a major change in look — it simply looks dated and worn out, thanks in large part to the carpeting and faux wood paneling. The homeowners wanted to bring light, life, and funky style to the space. To see what they did, read more.
The homeowners' solution was to use multiple colors of paint on the stairs and railing, and a bright-gold hue on the walls. They then hung paintings in sets across the walls. A piece of rustic planking was used as a bench next to the railing, and refurbished wood floors made the space open up. It's quite a change for the better! Even if your style leans more towards sleek minimalism, it's hard not to appreciate the improvement, as well as the hard work that must have gone into the project.

Eeee. I don't love it. But it's better than before.
1I like the idea, but I would have painted the wood a more neutral colour like a light grey, and hung up pictures in frames more like this:

Good going replacing that carpet with wooden floors.
2I don't like it, either one.
3I don't care for the photos, and I would have chose a pale yellow insted. But I really like the light.
4Not my cup of tea, but yes an improvement over the before.
The paintings hanging on the wall look like paint by number kits, but
5it could be because I'm seeing them from a distance.
To me, too many pictures on stairs can be unsafe, but this is definitely an improvement and looks much brighter!
6better, but not great
7eww, b4. eww, after.
8It is an improvement, but they could have done something much better!
9HOLY WILDERNESS ILLUSTRATION!!
10Not my style, but definitely an improvement!
Love the yellow and the light fixture, but all those pictures are a little out of control. Still an improvement, though!
11Oh that's hilarious! I thought I was the only person who collects paint-by-numbers!
12Definitely has a lot of personality.
13Definitely a case of Hippie Chic...Pea green balusters and bright yellow walls...orb lighting...eek! I would have removed the wood paneled walls and exposed the dry wall/plaster walls. Painted a neutral color to open the space more and not make it look so narrow. I think staining the newell and balusters a richer color would have brightened things up a bit too. The lighting looks like a flea market find. That would definitely be replaced too!
14how are pictures dangerous? they don't seem very heavy to me.
15So, I have to agree I don't love it but I do think it looks so much better than before. I just don't like that much stuff on my walls.
16it's not my deal but it's pretty and happy
17Idk...I kind of liked it better the way it was originally, but it's def a happy look
