If you're dismayed by the prices of accent rugs these days, or just looking for an inexpensive solution to pull a room together while you look for the perfect one, I have the answer to your problem-o. Stop by a cheap home furnishing store (Ikea, Bed Bath & Beyond, a local outlet) and pick up two or three small cotton rugs, which you can find for $2 to $10. Then, tape or stitch them together to create a larger accent rug, which would normally cost you upwards of $100.
I once took this project into my own hands with some household duct tape and two $7 rugs from a local linen outlet. No, it doesn't make for the most crave worthy rug, but it's a quick, small change that can make a room look a bit more composed.

Neat idea. Sometimes looking in the bath section of stores works well too. Depending on the size of a rug you want I've been able to use bathroom items in other rooms of my apt.
I needed curtains to tie in the colors of pale blue, chocolate brown, and birch furniture so I ended up finding this amazing fabric shower curtain on CB2, so I bought 3.
1Wow. Good idea.
2I managed to score some (new) FLOR tiles on ebay, but they weren't near as cheap as this idea!
Also, LOVE your giraffe pillow. So cute!
Oops. I meant zebra!
3I love it! I think there are so many cross-over items one can use from different departments of a 'home' store. It makes for alot of creativity and DIY's.
4My post was in addition to aimeeb's.
5I actually just bought rugs last night - I was amazed at how expensive even the ones in Target are! My mom suggested I go to a big carpet/flooring shop and ask if they have any "remainder rugs" and I ended up picking up two 5'x 8' rugs (one plain, one with a print) for $130 for both.
While this isn't as cheap as duct taping rugs together, it's still much cheaper than the original option and my rugs are both really nice!
6This is awesome! I suppose fabric glue would also do? :S I've been meaning to buy that but I'm not sure how well it really works.
