DIYer Paul Smith spent several weekends constructing shelves for the odd, recessed space on either side of his fireplace. He cut wood to size, drilled, glued, clamped, and painted, and came up with something amazing. Here's what it looked like about halfway through the project.

Paul writes, "I think the shelves look pretty neat now the front room is painted. We have no idea what to use this room for, it's kind of a spare sitting room."

Pretty neat is an understatement, if you ask me. It looks like a great space for sitting, reading, or socializing. What a lovely change this is!

So awesome.
1Cool!! He should replace his current TV with a plasma and place right above the fireplace.
2i've always wanted that kind of set up in my living room. the only thing i find kind of awkward is the tv that juts out. i think a flat screen tv mounted above the fireplace would be hot!
3New Mantle over fireplace, plasma tv on wall above mantle, than a cozy chair with a floor lamp where the current tv is, and you'll be set. All your friends will be jealous!
4I've got that awkward space on just one side of my fireplace. Now I've got a good idea!!
5So cool, I'm working on getting a bookcase built in myself.
6I want to put built-in shelves like this in my place too, but I fear I'm not as handy as Paul!
7This was a great idea. I also think a new mantle would really bring it together, add a few more shelves and you have yourself a library!
8Love it!
