I am in need of some advice. I have always wanted to grow my own string of pearls, and I finally went out and bought two plants. I don't know what I am doing wrong but I think I am slowly killing them both. Any tips?

String of pearls, also called string of beads, is one of my favorite houseplants! A good friend of mine has a lot of these plants hanging in her house, and she's successfully kept them going for years. My first word of advice is to not overwater them! Since they're a succulent, they want to have dry soil in between waterings. They also appreciate medium light exposure, for four or more hours a day. In wintertime, when temperatures are cooler, you only need to water the plant a few times a month at most, but as temperatures increase, increase your waterings gradually. The number one way to kill this plant is by overwatering it! My friend also adds, "String of pearls are very easy to grow from cuttings. I don't like it when they get too stringy, so sometimes I drape the strings back up into the pot and they seem to root themselves in. I trim off dried-up pearls. When they flower, the flowers are kind of ugly and strangely sticky."

11I grew this plant in the 70's and 80's it is a succulent and as mentioned, requires little water--it will become a bright green given the proper amount of sunlight--a sunny morning sun makes mine happy.( only for 2-3 hours) This plant is Poisonous if you eat a pound of it--many plants are given such a bad rap--take Poinsetta for instance, you see them during the Holidays--and all say--WATCH OUT they are POISON--yes, they are if you eat a pound-to include the stems and blooms--and it won't KILL you--just makes you sick--kind of like if you ate 1 pound of freash basil at one sitting.....there ARE poisonous plants--the majot one being Oleander--all parts are poisonous--that's why folks that live in or near deer feeding places ( like me) plant it--even the Deer know. Many other plants are just given a bad rap. Daffodil are poisonous to Deer and will make us have a stomach ache--but to Deer--they stay AWAY..what other plants is veryone growing that are interesting?

12Thanks for all the watering info. Anyone know what (and when) to fertilize it with? Since it is a flowering plant, I would guess it likes N. Would a low/weak dilution of fish emulsion do the trick? If so, how often? Thanks.

14Does anyone know if this plant does okay outside in San Diego? Or maybe it's better indoors? I have two and the pearls are looking a little shriveled on both. I'm not sure if they aren't getting enough water or if I should move them inside. Thanks for your help!
