Good news for those of us who hate plastic bags: As of October 2008, Ikea will no longer offer plastic or paper bags. Instead, the store will only offer reusable plastic bags to its customers. Last March, Ikea set a goal of reducing its US stores’ plastic bag consumption by 50 percent, reducing plastic bag use from 70 million to 35 million plastic bags in the first year. The store wanted customers to go reusable, and sold the sturdy Ikea blue bag for $.59.
And if Ikea customers weren't happy with that choice, they previously had the option of purchasing Ikea plastic bags for five cents, with all proceeds going to American Forests to plant trees to restore forests and reduce CO2 emissions. Since the "bag the plastic bag" program began in March of 2007, Ikea has donated more than $300,000 from their disposable plastic bag sales to American Forests.
I, for one, am looking forward to October, when Ikea is completely disposable-bag free.

Awesome! I've had my blue bag forever.
1Love my blue bag - it can hold a huge load of laundry.
2I have about 10 of those bags. my husband complains about them constantly!
3I actually thought they did this a long time ago...I never see plastic bags there, nor do I ask for them. I bring my totes that I use for grocery shopping.
4Very cool. As if I needed another reason to love Ikea.
5I just wish Nashville had an IKEA to go to... One of these days I'll make the trek down to Atlanta and hit up IKEA.
6woohoo!!
7I love those bags.. great for laundry, but if they're bad, they should go! I think the ones we have will last for ever anyway.
8We have like 20 of these, they make great laundry bags!
9yea i love these too! use it constantly for taking the recycling to the bins downstairs at my apartment, laundry, costco trips, everything. best 59 cents i've ever spent
10I had no idea you could buy those blue bags! The last time I was there they made me buy a plastic one for 5 cents, I would have much rather have purchased the blue one for 59 cents.
11Way to go Ikea. I love it when places act ecologically responsible.
12Great idea. I can't wait until all stores do this.
13the two around where i live haven't had them for a while now. i always bring my big backpack with me since i take the bus home and thin plastic bags with boxes in them don't really work well.
14i'm currently living in italy, and it seems that the parts of europe i've vivsited charge for plastic bags, gently reminding consumers to use other forms of transport for grocery...and i also have one of those iconic blue ikea bags, love love love for laundry!
