If you're interested in native plants, then you should definitely check out an organization called Wild Ones. Wild ones: Native Plants, Natural Landscapes teaches homeowners and property owners how to turn their green space into an environmentally sound, beautifully landscaped space that will promote bird habitat and biodiversity. Wild Ones works toward this goal by promoting the preservation, restoration, and establishment of native plant communities. This Wisconsin-based organization has chapters all over the United States, with knowledgeable members who can help you figure out the best plants for your little stretch of green. To see if your state has a chapter, check here. In the meantime, take a look at some of the gorgeous images from the winners of their 2007 native landscaping photo contest. I'm pretty certain that they'll inspire you to new gardening goals this season!

This is such a great idea, and so important for natural ecology. Spreading invasive species of plants for aesthetics is a really bad idea. Some plants can really take over an area, and choke everything else out. Something like this can help people who don't know a lot about plants to make smarter choices, and make the wildlife in your area much happier! You'll see more local birds and butterflies with local plants.
