This is great, but are people turning off their TV's too. Somehow it seems counterproductive to encourage people to JUST turn off their lights when their TVs still use electricity. (And probably more than the lights!)

Gonna be at work - we could probably turn off the lights ... but not the computers, monitors, radios, etc.

I just told my husband about this and he is very excited. He wants to try and rally the people in our city to do this once a week.

What happens when everyone turns their lights back on? Could cause a lot of problems on energy grids around the world if enough people participate.

This video was moving, I will be turning everything off at 8.

i was going to but i totally forgot and remembered at like 20 after... oops

i did it and my family was over. we got into a conversation about whether or not this blackout idea is really going to help reverse global warming and here's what we decided: just having the conversation made us more aware of the electricity that we do use and that in itself led us to make other pledges, like turning off our computer every night and starting to use canvas bags instead of plastic bags when we shop.
so all in all, the blackout was a huge success for us!

I have to be a naysayer (I was camping in the bush – accidentally participating). Earth hour is a superficial thing to make city folk feel self-congratulatory about themselves - not to achieve any real purpose other than raising awareness. But awareness of what? My primary complaint is that it occurs at night. There has to be a base load on power stations anyway. Less power is used at night than by day. Not using the power at night just means that the power generated is wasted in most cases (unless it can be stored, eg, as by pumping water uphill to be re-used in hydro-electric power). More would be done, ironically, by having Earth Hour by day. Try operating in natural light for a day. Although less power was used overall, the question is - was the power that was not used wasted?

I participated. No lights only a candle in the bathroom. It was nice but kinda what I do on Saturday nights anyway.
