Brushing your teeth and realize that the water level is rising dangerously high? Your sink is clogged, and with who knows (and wants to know) what. Not so fast! You don't need to hire a plumber or reach for a bottle of noxious chemicals to make your drain so fresh and so clean. You can handle the task with just a few household ingredients.
Supplies:
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup white vinegar
- 1 cup lemon juice

- Pour the baking soda down the drain.
- Then, the vinegar.
- Rinse with hot water.
- Plug the opening with some type of stopper and let it bubble away.
- Then, pour in the lemon juice.
Easy as pie! The acidic reaction of the first two steps will eat away at whatever is down there, and the citrus will kick any gnarly scents.

2I assume this will work on a tub drain, too, which is the consistent problem in my house! We've been using the heaviest-duty Liquid Plumr, but I'm tired of buying it and feeling guilty every time I use it because I know it's crap for the environment, plus it doesn't seem to work for more than a few weeks at a time anyway!
3We had problems with our tub when we first bought our house and tried who knows how many chemicals to get it to stay clear. Finally, one day I just unscrewed and lifted off the drain cover, stuck some needlenose pliers down there and started pulling stuff out. It was like 3 lbs of hair and slime (gag!). No amount of anything was going to dissolve that giant hairball! Sometimes you just got to get in there and find out what the clog is, depending on the design of your tub or sink.

9I usually use bleach when my drains start to run slow and that fixes them right up. I'll try this since it's better for the environment!
10We've tried drano multiple times on our bathroom sink but it just won't work, it's been slow since we moved in. So the landlord finally got the plumbers to take a look at things last week - Now the sink does not drain at ALLL! I've had to brush my teeth using the tub or kitchen for a week... The plumbers are supposed to come today to fix it... let's just say i dont have much trust in them!

also, you can pour vinegar and an alka-seltzer in a ziploc bag and rubber band it over your sink spout or shower head to remove limescale. warning: add alka seltzer after rubber band and bag are in place. it foams like crazy!

19I would recommend using the PLUNGER on the drain too... it helps move things through the drain. Just fill up the sink and plunge the water on through... works like a charm!
20I've been doing this for years!! It works well, but only after the water drains (s l o w l y) out. If I don't have a lemon handy, I'll use an orange, it still works, and smells super yummy!!
